Continental Mazda and WCMC at Brookfield Zoo!

Windy City Miata Club continues a holiday tradition!

Every year in November, Brookfield Zoo erects hundreds of evergreen trees throughout the zoo as part of the “Holiday Magic” celebration.  The zoo staff string lights on the trees, but each tree is sponsored financially and decorated with ornaments by a corporate or community group.  The trees remain on display through the holiday season, each with a sign identifying who donated and decorated it. Decorating a Holiday Magic tree has been a great way to have fun, support a good cause, and put the Windy City Miata Club name on display for tens of thousands of Brookfield Zoo visitors to see over several weeks.

For the past several years our friends at Continental Mazda of Naperville have joined WCMC in sponsoring and decorating a Corporate Tree.  The Corporate Trees are larger than the Community Trees and are prominently displayed at Roosevelt Foundation in the heart of the zoo. We are grateful to Continental for all the ways in which the dealership has supported WCMC over the years and we look forward to joining Anthony Storino, sales manager, and our other friends from Continental in decorating a Miata-themed tree.

“What about the ornaments?” you ask.  Typically each tree’s ornaments are homemade and say something about the group that sponsors and decorates the tree.  Over the years WCMC members have created some wonderfully artistic and amusing ornaments – Tire Gauge Man, curvy road signs, cones, “Zoom Zoom” spelled out in various media, and so on.  Clearly we are a creative group.  While the Club still has ornaments that have survived from previous years, we always need new ornaments.  If you are interested in making ornaments (whether or not you can come to the zoo to help hang them), please let us know and we can send you the zoo’s ornament guidelines.  The most important things to keep in mind are:  the ornaments need to last through several weeks of winter weather; some of them won’t last so don’t use mother’s heirloom jewelry (or anything else you would not want to get ruined); please don’t use edible materials; and – most importantly - the ornaments need to be REALLY BIG to be visible day and evening.  And if you are still trying to dispose of all those blue Mazda lanyards we have been accumulating over the years, bring them along to the zoo. Strung together they make a unique garland.

Of course, since this is a WCMC event, food will be involved!  We will meet for a delicious meal at the Irish Times Pub and Restaurant.  The food is excellent.  We recommend the stew, the shepherd’s pie, and of course the traditional Irish breakfast (with bangers).

 The particulars:

We will meet on Sunday, November 18 at 12:00 noon at Irish Times Pub and Restaurant, 8869 Burlington Avenue in Brookfield.  (NOTE:  Irish Times generally does not do separate checks, so please bring cash.)  After fortifying ourselves with a warm meal we will caravan to the zoo to decorate our tree.  After decorating you will then have the rest of the afternoon to enjoy the zoo.

If you have a current Brookfield Zoo membership, be sure to bring your membership card with you on November 18 for admission and parking. If you are not a Brookfield Zoo member we have you covered. The tree sponsorship fee includes guest passes as well as a limited number of parking passes; car-pooling is encouraged.  So fill up your winter car or OTM with your WCMC friends, your significant other, your children, your neighbors…all are welcome.

 DEADLINE:

Please let us know you are coming by emailing us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by no later than November 10 with the following information:

Names of participants who are Brookfield Zoo members

It’s important that we receive your email by the November 10 deadline so we can send you information about the types of ornaments that are allowed and encouraged (versus discouraged or prohibited), make sure we have enough Zoo admission and parking passes, and give the restaurant a head count.

We enjoy planning this annual event and hope YOU will join us and our friends from Continental this year.
