Photo Rally - Carpentersville
Sunday, August 30, 2020
Hits : 526

[updated August 18 – registration is now open – please review this page before registering]

With a little help from our friends, we’ve finalized the route for the rally.  We’ll start in Carpentersville and end in Woodstock. Each team will start at a different time (between 8 and 10 am), minimizing contact between teams, for both competitive and COVID reasons. You should expect to spend about 6 ½ hours on the rally route. We'll include restaurants, picnic grounds, and gas stations so you can take breaks when needed.

In a photo rally, we give you general instructions, route instructions, and a score sheet containing images to identify. There are no gimmicks (like deliberately misspelled street names). You can just follow the route and enjoy a drive in the country. Or you can join the contest....

To compete, you simply write down the odometer reading whenever you spot one of our images. In a rally, the lowest score wins. You'll get 0 points for matching our mileage, but we'll add points for every 1/10th of a mile away from our mileage, as well as for missed photos.

You'll be entering as a team, consisting of 2 to 6 people in 1 to 3 cars. Each team must designate a navigator, who can't also be a driver. If your team has more than one car, the navigator must be able to communicate with the other cars (CB, FRS, GMRS, cellphone). You can use an OTM, too.

You'll manage the contact within your team, and you'll be required to follow CDC, state, and local guidelines whenever we're together. FYI, part of the route goes through Wisconsin. (Cook and DuPage counties were recommending a 14-day quarantine after a visit to Wisconsin, but that was rescinded on Aug 18th.)

With respect to the images, all reference materials and electronic aids are prohibited, both before and during the event. No web searches, photo matching apps, or offline POI databases; nothing but driving and observing.

  • You can use a paper map, navigation app, or GPS to help you stay on the route or locate amenities.
