Driving (and Camping) The Driftless

Signups are now open for our weekend in Wisconsin’s “driftless” area – the part of the Midwest that wasn’t scoured flat during the ice age.

The details are still being decided – here’s what we know so far: We’ll be tent camping in a group site at Wyalusing State Park, near Prairie du Chien, WI on Friday and Saturday nights. We’ll be taking the scenic (twisty) roads up to the campground on Friday, there’ll be a loop tour on Saturday, and more back roads home on Sunday. If you want to do something else on Saturday, there’s canoeing, biking, hiking, etc., in, and around, the park. Stargazers should bring their telescopes – the park has an observation area with concrete pads.

We’re not planning any restaurant meals – picnic lunches, with two suppers and two breakfasts cooked at the campsite. We’ll send out a meal survey and share the cost of provisions. The camping charges are low, and we’ll split that cost, too. Each car will need a Wisconsin State Parks and Forests sticker. ($11/night or $38 for the year).

No room for all your gear? We’ll have an SUV to take your extra gear up on Friday and back on Sunday. Don’t like tenting? You can look for lodging in Prairie du Chien or Marquette, IA. It takes about 15 minutes to drive from the campsite to the closest hotels (near the Prairie du Chien airport) and a further 15 minutes to Marquette.
