Annual WCMC Tree Trimming - Brookfield
Sunday, November 22, 2020

Continental Mazda and WCMC Continue a Holiday Tradition!

Every year in November, Brookfield Zoo erects hundreds of evergreen trees throughout the zoo as part of the “Holiday Magic” celebration.  The zoo staff string lights on the trees, but each tree is sponsored financially and decorated with ornaments by a corporate or community group.  The trees remain on display through the holiday season, each with a sign identifying who donated and decorated it. Decorating a Holiday Magic tree has been a great way to have fun, support a good cause, and put the Windy City Miata Club name on display for 100,000 Brookfield Zoo visitors to see through the holiday season.

For the past several years our friends at Continental Mazda of Naperville have joined WCMC in sponsoring and decorating a Corporate Tree.  Corporate Trees are large and are prominently displayed at Roosevelt Foundation in the heart of the zoo. We are grateful to Continental for all the ways in which the dealership has supported WCMC over the years and we look forward to joining Anthony Storino, sales manager, and other friends from Continental in decorating a Miata-themed tree.

Each tree’s ornaments are homemade and say something about the tree’s sponsors/decorators.  Over the years WCMC members have created some wonderfully artistic and amusing ornaments reflecting our love for our roadsters. While the Club still has ornaments that have survived from previous years, we always need new ornaments.  If you are interested in making ornaments (whether or not you can come to the zoo to help hang them), please let us know and we will send you the zoo’s ornament guidelines.  The most important things to keep in mind are:  the ornaments need to last through several weeks of winter weather and – most importantly - the ornaments need to be REALLY BIG to be visible day and evening. Look through previous year’s photos posted on the website Gallery if you need inspiration to trigger your creativity.

PLEASE NOTE:  This year will be a little different. For the health and safety of WCMC members and Continental staff we will omit our usual lunch gathering and instead meet in the zoo at our assigned tree.  To manage the number of groups in the zoo at any one time, the zoo has spread out the decorating over multiple days and more importantly, each person (including Brookfield Zoo members) must have a timed entry admission pass, with each vehicle also required to have a timed entry pass for parking. You may stay in the zoo as long as you like after decorating, but no one will be admitted earlier than the time on their timed entry pass.  Also face masks are required of everyone participating in this event. Finally, there is a much earlier reservation deadline than in years past.

The particulars:

  • We plan to decorate on Sunday, November 22, with an entry time of 12:40 pm so we can meet at our assigned tree at 1:00 pm.
  • Please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by no later than October 15Put “Tree Trim” in the subject line of your email and let us know:
  • how many people will be in your car;
  • and the email address at which you would like to receive your passes.
  • We will distribute the timed entry admission and parking passes to you electronically. We suggest you print them as you will need to show them upon arrival at the zoo on November 22.  (You will not be allowed to enter the zoo prior to 12:40 pm.)
  • When we know our tree number we will send that to the group electronically as well.

Remember, it’s important that we receive your email by October 15 so we can make sure we have enough timed admission and parking passes for our group. If we receive your response after this deadline, we can’t guarantee you will be admitted at the same time as the rest of the group.

We enjoy planning this annual event and hope YOU will join us and our friends from Continental this year.
