Tree Trim Tradition Triumphs!

Every year during the holiday season, Brookfield Zoo erects hundreds of evergreen trees on their campus, to be decorated by community organizations, family groups, corporations, etc.  For more years than we can count, Windy City Miata Club has participated in this “Holiday Magic” celebration by sponsoring and decorating a tree; for the last several years WCMC has partnered with Napleton Mazda of Naperville (formerly Continental) to sponsor and decorate a corporate tree.   While the smaller “community” trees are spread throughout the Zoo, the “corporate” trees stand around Roosevelt Fountain in the center of the Zoo.  Having our decorated tree there with its sign acknowledging Napleton and our club is GREAT publicity.

 Last year, with appropriate mitigations, we were able to uphold this tradition despite a global pandemic! This year we will again embrace our noble tradition.  (Take that, Delta variant!)  We invite you to join us for the excitement!  Ponder the mysteries!  Will we ever again find our tree just steps away from the Corvette Club’s tree?  (Doubtful, unless they pony up for a corporate tree.)  Will our tree topper again become a flying Miata?  Who will be brave enough to climb our stepladder?  If it’s cold, who will wear the most layers?  (Hint:  Who has come in the past dressed like the Michelin Man?)

 Seriously, this is a fun outing and it gets you complimentary admission to the Zoo:  after our tree has been decorated you are free wander about and see all your favorite animals.

 There are a few things you need to know…

 The date and time are Sunday, November 14.  We will meet at our assigned tree at 1:00 pm.

 Tree ornaments should be car-themed and LARGE enough to be seen from a distance, including after dark.  They should not be edible, and they should withstand several weeks of unpredictable Chicago weather.  While we have ornaments that have survived from prior years, we can always use new ones.  The Zoo publishes Ornament Guidelines, which we will share with you.  For ideas – or just for fun – please check the Galleries section of the club website.  You’ll be amazed at just how creative some club members can be!

 A head count is needed so we can obtain enough passes for parking and entry to the Zoo.  Parking passes are more limited than Zoo admission passes, so car-pooling is encouraged.

 Pandemic mitigations will be observed.  As of this writing, face masks are required only indoors (indoor exhibits, dining facilities, restrooms); however, given the fluidity of the virus situation, it’s possible mask requirements will change and/or the Zoo may institute additional mitigation measures.  Watch for updates from us.

 Sign-up deadline is November 7.  This is to allow us to send you your Zoo admission and parking passes.  (Zoo members may not need passes, as they can use their membership for admission and parking.)  Of course, the earlier you let us know you are coming, the sooner we can send you the Ornament Guidelines.

 If you plan to join us, please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  Put “Tree Trim” in the subject line of your email and be sure to tell us:

  • How many people are coming in your car;
  • whether anyone in your party is a member of Brookfield Zoo; and
  • the email address at which you wish to receive your Zoo parking and admission passes. (You will need to PRINT the passes and SHOW them in order to enter the Zoo.)

 We look forward to continuing this fun and community-spirited tradition, and hope you will join us.  Remember let us hear from you by November 7 or earlier.
